Large-scale bank closings can have a devastating effect on the economy of a nation. Following a stock market crash in 1929, many U.S. banks went out of business. The financial funding that keeps businesses growing disappeared. During the Great Depression, massive numbers of people were unemployed, factories closed, and banks foreclosed on mortgages. This photograph was taken by Dorothea Lange in 1933.
