Buffalo Soldiers
In the 1860s the United States Army established two regiments of black soldiers known as Buffalo Soldiers. Although they were segregated from white soldiers and often faced discrimination, Buffalo Soldiers, such as the cavalry unit shown here, gained a reputation for bravery in battle.
