| American dancer and choreographer Alvin Ailey redefined modern dance by incorporating his African American heritage into his works and by employing primarily African Americans in his company, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Ailey’s dance troupe became known internationally for performing pieces by such prominent choreographers as Katherine Dunham, Pearl Primus, and José Limón, in addition to Ailey’s own works.
