Sit-Ins in Greensboro, North Carolina
In 1960, a year before Jesse Jackson transferred to a university in Greensboro, North Carolina, four black college students walked into a Greesboro Woolworth store and sat down at the lunch counter, which normally served only white customers. Their sit-in protest against segregation soon spread throughout the South. As civil rights demonstrations grew across Southern campuses, Jackson became an important student organizer and leader.
