American playwright Tony Kushner won the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for Millennium Approaches, the first part of his epic drama Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes (1993). Set in the mid- to late 1980s, Angels in America explores attitudes toward homosexuality and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). The Angel appears periodically in the play, acting as a messenger to the main characters.
