| The 1972 Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) reads, “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any state on account of sex.” The measure passed both houses of Congress by March 1972 and then required approval by 38 state legislatures to become part of the Constitution. Despite massive demonstrations of support by women’s groups, as shown here, the ERA garnered the approval of only 35 states and failed to become an amendment.
