Sun's Corona
The corona is the outermost part of the Sun’s atmosphere. This picture of the corona was taken during a total solar eclipse on July 11, 1991, in La Paz, Baja California, Mexico. The part of the corona closest to the Sun becomes visible during a solar eclipse because the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth and blocks light from the center of the Sun. The corona extends far beyond what is visible in this photo to the outskirts of the solar system.
