Gateway of the Sun
The Gateway of the Sun was built by the Tiwanaku (Tiahuanaco) civilization in what anthropologists believe was the 9th century. Tiwanaku was a major ceremonial center, and this gateway undoubtedly was used for ritual purposes. The center portion of the lintel, seen here, shows the figure of a god holding two staffs. Rays around his head end in circles or the heads of pumas. The style is similar to that of the Aztecs and Mayas.
