The Night Watch
The Night Watch (1642) by Rembrandt van Rijn was also known as The Shooting Company of Captain Frans Banning Cocq because it was a group portrait commissioned by a militia company. It shows the company emerging from its headquarters and heading for a ceremonial parade. Originally much larger, the painting was cropped in 1715 when it was moved to Amsterdam’s town hall.
