In 1963 Jesse Jackson participated in the March On Washington, a peaceful civil rights demonstration, and heard Martin Luther King, Jr., deliver his famous speech, “I Have a Dream.” Throughout his career, King pressed for equal treatment and improved circumstances for blacks, organizing nonviolent protests and delivering powerful speeches. King became Jackson’s mentor and eventually his close associate.
