Louisiana Purchase

Louisiana Purchase
In 1803 United States President Thomas Jefferson paid Napoleon Bonaparte of France $15 million for about 2.1 million sq km (about 800,000 sq mi) of land west of the Mississippi River. Called the Louisiana Purchase, the vast new territory provided growing room for the young nation, and it helped eliminate tensions between westward-moving settlers and France, a colonial power and former ally.
