Pathogenic Bacterium
Many types of flagellated bacteria, including the Salmonella bacterium pictured here, cause disease in both animals and humans. The organism moves by means of fine, threadlike projections called flagella. It multiplies quickly in the intestines, causing severe inflammation. Poultry in particular among farm animals is a reservoir for Salmonella bacteria, which can be transferred to humans through contaminated meat, eggs, and egg products.
