| During the 13th century, Saint Thomas Aquinas sought to reconcile the philosophy of Aristotle, which was based on observation, with the mystical theology of Saint Augustine. Aquinas wrote that reason and faith are fully compatible and that God can be known through both methods. While Aquinas himself accepted the existence of God on faith, he offered five arguments based upon reasoning to support this belief. | ||||||
