| The Arab statesman known as Faisal I was a leader in the Arab revolt against Ottoman rule during and after World War I (1914-1918). In cooperation with the British, Faisal and his Arab forces captured Damascus, the capital of Syria, from the Ottomans in 1918. In 1921 Faisal was elected the first king of the British mandate of Iraq. Under his reign, Iraq joined the League of Nations as an independent state in 1932. |
