| African American sociologist and historian W. E. B. Du Bois helped found the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1910. A tireless advocate for racial equality, Du Bois was one of the most influential African American leaders of the late-19th and 20th centuries. After World War II ended in 1945, Du Bois was harassed by U.S. government officials because of his leftist political beliefs. In 1961 he moved to the newly independent West African nation of Ghana, where he lived until his death in 1963. |
