19th Century Mexican Immigrants
The ancestors of many Mexican Americans settled in what is now the southwestern United States from the mid-16th century to the mid-19th century, when the region was a colony of Spain. The United States annexed most of the region between 1845 and 1848. Since then, thousands of Mexican immigrants have settled in the southwestern United States. This Mexican family was photographed in 1912 as they prepared to cross the border from Mexico into Texas.
