Touro Synagogue
European Jews sought refuge in the New World much like the English and Dutch pilgrims who arrived in the 17th century. The Jewish communities incorporated some of the New World styles in building their synagogues and homes. The Touro Synagogue in Newport, Rhode Island, was built between 1759 and 1763 using the colonial style common to most churches of that time. Touro is the oldest synagogue in the United States.
