Thomas Hart Benton took part in an American art movement called regionalism. Regionalist artists avoided styles related to European modernism, preferring to depict realistic scenes of life in America. One of Benton’s most powerful murals is A Social History of the State of Missouri (1934-1936), in the state capitol building in Jefferson City, Missouri. The section of the mural pictured here illustrates the climactic scene from the “Ballad of Frankie and Johnny,” a 19th-century folk song.
