The Internationale has been the anthem of socialists around the world. The words were composed in 1871 during the Paris Commune and set to music in 1888. In 1899 the song became the anthem of the French labor movement, and in 1910 it was adopted by an organization of socialists known as the Second International and translated into many languages. Until 1944 a Russian translation of The Internationale was the national anthem of the Soviet Union.
