Much admired by his contemporaries, including composers Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert, Italian composer Luigi Cherubini was active mainly in Paris, his adopted home. He became the director of the Paris Conservatory and supervised music at the French court. He composed dramatic works for theater (which anticipate the romantic style), instrumental music, and sacred music including this requiem from 1817.
