Indigenous Groups Demand Input
In 1996 Ovide Mercredi, national chief of the Assembly of First Nations, and Rosemary Kuptana, head of the Inuit Tapirisat of Canada, marched outside a building in Ottawa, Ontario. Inside, Canadian prime minister Jean Chrétien was meeting with the provincial premiers during the First Ministers Conferences.
