| Robert Bourassa, leader of Québec’s Liberal Party, served as provincial premier from 1970 to 1976 and from 1985 to 1994. In response to a growing separatist sentiment in Québec, Bourassa sought constitutional reforms that would recognize the largely French-speaking province as a “distinct society” within Canada. Although he fought for greater provincial autonomy for Québec, he remained a firm supporter of Canadian unity. |
