| Isaac Riley was a slave in Missouri before he escaped to Canada, where slavery was prohibited. He settled with his family in what is now Ontario. In the 1800s thousands of American slaves fled to Canada on the Underground Railroad, a network of escape routes operated by abolitionists. | ||||||
