| Color became sober and men’s clothing became simpler during the 1800s, although vests and cravats might provide color and pattern. Men wore top hats along with jackets that had broad shoulders, turned-up collars, and narrow waists. Trousers were narrow and ended at the ankle or in a strap under the boot, as seen in this fashion plate from 1830. | ||||||
