Kyōto Skyline
The mountains of western Honshū Island rise behind the sprawling metropolis of Kyōto. Kyōto became the capital of Japan in the late 8th century, developing into an aristocratic cultural mecca. The capital was moved to Tokyo in the 19th century, but Kyōto remains an important cultural site.
