Although Christopher Columbus was an excellent navigator, he was a poor administrator. During the time he served as governor of the Spanish colonies he founded in the Caribbean, the colonists became so dissatisfied that they complained to the Spanish king and queen. In 1500 the monarchs sent Francisco de Bobadilla to the Caribbean to replace Columbus as governor. As soon as he arrived, Bobadilla had Columbus chained and placed on a ship for Spain. Despite offers from the crew, Columbus refused to have the chains removed until the ship arrived in Spain several weeks later.
