As antislavery sentiment grew in the United States in the early and mid-1800s, abolitionists began to publish large numbers of posters and pamphlets condemning slavery, the slave trade, and proslavery politicians and laws. This poster protests the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850, which required that slaves who had escaped to free states be returned to their masters.
