| The tombs of 19th-century Merina dynasty rulers Queen Rasoherina and King Radama I stand side by side on burial grounds in central Madagascar. The Merina culture descended from that of the original Malay settlers of Madagascar and rose to prominence during the early 19th century. Many Merina rulers, including King Radama I, resisted the initial European presence on Madagascar. Merina rulers fought against colonial expansion until the French takeover of Madagascar in 1896. | ||||||
