Aztec Sacrificial Knife

Aztec Sacrificial Knife
The Aztec used knives such as this one to cut out the hearts of their sacrificial victims. This sacrificial knife has a stone blade made of chalcedony (a type of quartz) that would have been honed to razor-sharpness for a sacrifice. The wooden handle, carved in the form of a crouching figure, is inlaid with a mosaic of turquoise, malachite, and fragments of shells.
