| As governor-general of Pakistan, Iskander Mirza oversaw the transformation of Pakistan into an Islamic republic. Mirza became the republic’s first president in 1956. When his political influence began deteriorating amidst unrest in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), Mirza suspended the constitution and instituted martial law. As a result, he was forced out of office. Mirza retired to London, England, where he died in 1969. |
