Baltic States Assert Nationalism
National consciousness reemerged in the three Baltic states—Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia—in the late 1980s, when they were still Soviet republics. Demonstrations displaying strong feelings of nationalism became increasingly frequent. In 1990 Lithuania became the first Soviet republic to declare its independence.
