The National Gallery of Scotland, founded in 1859 in Edinburgh, is housed in a neoclassical building designed by Scottish architect William Playfair. The museum has an outstanding collection of paintings, prints, and drawings by European artists from the Renaissance to the late 19th century. The gallery’s collection of Scottish paintings is especially strong.
