Cherenkov Radiation in a Reactor Core

Cherenkov Radiation in a Reactor Core
Cherenkov radiation, named for Russian physicist Pavel Cherenkov, occurs when charged particles move through a substance at speeds greater than the speed of light in the substance. Here, charged particles moving through the uranium fuel of a nuclear reactor produce a bluish glow. The technician is reflected in the water that surrounds the uranium.
