No nails were used to construct the Istana Kenangan, built in 1926 to serve as the temporary royal quarters of the Sultan of Perak. Beginning in the late 18th century, the British exercised control over the Malay Peninsula by collaborating with local rulers and appointing advisors that dictated policy through the sultan.
