The ruins of Fort Aguada attract tourists to this historical area on the western coast of India. Conquered by Portuguese viceroy Alfonso de Albuquerque in 1510, Goa became Portugal’s chief stronghold in the region. The Portuguese hold on Goa enabled Portugal to secure trade and introduce Christian missionaries, who converted thousands of Indians in the area. The Portuguese dominated commerce in the Indian Ocean until the Dutch East India Company gained control in the 17th century.
