Edward Steichen, who became one of the most distinguished photographers of the 20th century, was also a painter for many decades. In later life he recalled how, after World War I (1914-1918), he reached a defining moment: Seeing paintings made by the concierge of his Paris apartment building that he considered superior to his own, he realized that his talent and vocation lay in photography, not in painting.
