Originally working within a small area of land along the Potomac River, French architect Pierre Charles L’Enfant designed a plan for the United States capital at the request of first president George Washington. Seeking to represent symbolically the spirit of the new nation, L’Enfant created a design for Washington, D.C., that placed the federal buildings in a central location and called for broad, diagonal avenues radiating out from this center.
