The flying squirrel is a type of nocturnal rodent with a membrane of furry skin between its front and hind legs. As it glides through the night, it stretches its limbs to extend the parachutelike membrane. The best known flying squirrel of North America is the eastern flying squirrel, which ranges from the Atlantic coast to the western plains.
