In the 1967 decision of Loving v. Virginia, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that state laws prohibiting interracial marriage were unconstitutional. In this excerpt from arguments before the Court, attorney Philip Hirschkop asserts that Virginia’s law against interracial marriage is a “slavery law” orginally enacted to protect white supremacy. The Court agreed, ruling that such racial discrimination violates the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
