Russian Coup of 1993

Russian Coup of 1993
Following the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russian politics was marked by tensions between reform-minded president Boris Yeltsin and conservative lawmakers in the government. In September 1993 tensions escalated into armed conflict when conservative deputies and their armed supporters occupied the parliament building, known as the White House. After several days the government shelled the building and arrested the coup participants.
