President Dwight Eisenhower speaks at a press conference to explain his administration’s attempt to deceive the public about the 1960 downing of a spy plane over the Soviet Union. After the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) U-2 spy plane was shot down over the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the U.S. State Department released a statement indicating that the plane was on a weather research mission. The plane’s pilot, Gary Powers, was captured by Soviet authorities and admitted that he worked for the CIA. Some historians believe that Eisenhower’s handling of the U-2 scandal contributed to heightened public cynicism about the United States political system.
