Nationalists
Alfonsines Party that wanted to restore the monarchy in Spain with Alfonso XIII as king.
Carlists Party that wanted to reinstate the Spanish monarchy with a descendant of Don Carlos Maria Isidro de Borbón as king.
CEDA Confederación Española de Derechas Autónomas (Spanish Confederation of Autonomous Rightist Groups), confederation of Catholic parties that made up the largest right-wing group in Spain.
Falange Falange (Phalanx), pro-fascist group founded by José Antonio Primo de Rivera in 1933.
FET/JONS Falange Española Tradicionalista de las JONS (Traditional Spanish Phalanx of the JONS), party formed by Generalísimo Franco's Decree of Unification in 1937, which merged all the Nationalist parties under his control.
UME Unión Militar Española (Spanish Military Union), military officers who plotted to overthrow Spain's Second Republic.
Loyalists
CNT Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (National Confederation of Labor), anarchist trade union that favored radical social change, rather than the moderate Second Republic.
FAI Federación Anarquista Ibérica (Iberian Anarchist Federation), radical anarchist militia affiliated with the CNT.
PCE Partido Comunista de España (Communist Party of Spain), Spain's branch of the Communist Party, which received support from Soviet Communists under Joseph Stalin and the Comintern.
POUM Partido Obrero de Unificación Marxista (Unified Marxist Workers' Party), militant Marxist party that opposed Soviet leader Joseph Stalin; it therefore opposed the PCE.
PSOE Partido Socialista Obrero Español (Spanish Socialist Party), socialist party in Spain, which opposed the radical social revolution and eventually allied itself with the PCE.
PSUC Partido Socialista Unificado de Cataluña (United Socialist Party of Catalonia), Catalan socialist party, which came under the control of the PCE and Soviet Communists.
UGT Unión General de Trabajadores (General Union of Workers), trade union organization affiliated with the PSOE.
