In August 1997, 185,000 workers for United Parcel Service (UPS) walked off the job in response to the company’s increasing dependence on part-time workers and its failure to raise some workers’ wages for several years. The strikers, represented by the Teamsters Union, remained on the picket lines for 15 days before reaching a settlement with UPS. The company agreed to create 10,000 full-time jobs for previously part-time workers and to increase pay and benefits.
