Mountains and Sea
American artist Helen Frankenthaler pioneered a new method of painting using thin washes of paint that soaked into unprimed canvas. Mountains and Sea (1952) is painted in oil on canvas and measures 2.2 by 3.0 m ( 7 ft 3 in by 9 ft 9 in). It is on extended loan by the artist to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
