Charlie Chaplin’s unique style of physical comedy combined techniques derived from mimes and circus clowns. He was particularly known for his trademark character the Tramp, a poignant comic figure readily identified by his bowler hat, baggy pants, and walking stick. This scene from one of his more than 70 films demonstrates Chaplin’s use of broad physical comedy, excellent timing, and absurd, idiosyncratic gestures.
