In 1968 the Democratic Party held its national convention to nominate its presidential candidate in Chicago, Illinois. Outside the convention, violence broke out between anti-Vietnam War protestors and the Chicago police. Although many observers believed the police acted with excessive force, many others blamed the antiwar demonstrators for the bloodshed.
