Each year Rio de Janeiro is awash with color, music, and dancing as the city celebrates Carnival. The festival takes place in late February or early March just before the Roman Catholic season of Lent. Thousands of tourists flood the city to experience the excitement and carefree atmosphere that overtakes the city as marching bands, fanciful floats, and costumed dancers parade through the streets.
