Heard here is a selection from Das Lied von der Erde (Song of the Earth), a symphonic song cycle in six parts written by German conductor Gustav Mahler in 1908. Using translations of Chinese poems for the text, Mahler portrays great emotion with his bold melodies and colorful orchestration.
