Kofi Annan
Kofi Annan of Ghana served as secretary general of the United Nations (UN) from 1997 through 2006, becoming the UN’s first secretary general from sub-Saharan Africa. Annan succeeded Boutros Boutros-Ghali of Egypt as secretary-general and was followed by Ban Ki Moon of South Korea.
