Under director J. Edgar Hoover, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) gained renown for arresting gangsters in the 1930s and apprehending Axis spies during World War II (1939-1945). After the war, Hoover turned his attention to what he believed was the growing threat of Communism. In this 1947 testimony before the House Committee on Un-American Activities, a committee of the House of Representatives, Hoover reveals his view that Communists are dangerous enemies of the country.
